ඌව පළාත් ගරු ආණ්ඩුකාරතුමා – අධිනීතිඥ රාජා කොල්ලුරේ මැතිතුමා
Mr. Raja Collure is an old boy of Ananda College and an alumini of the University of Ceylon
(Peradeniya Campus). At school he won the senior Civis prize. He was the President of the
Post Senior Students Union of the College. Late Mr. S.A Wijethilake in a certificate issued to
him has stated that he was one of the good students of the school.
During the period when he was a student at the Sri Lanka Law College he held the position of
General Secretary and later President of the Ceylon National Union of Students, the dominant
national student organization in the early part of 1960s which controlled the student bodies of
almost all universities and several other institutions.
For some time, before he embarked on his legal practice he served on the tutorial staff of Zahira
A lawyer of over fifty years seniority he commenced his practice in the criminal courts of first
instance and later practiced in the civil courts and tribunals and in the superior courts.
Mr. Collure was a founder delegate to the first Bar Council of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka
(1975). He continues to serve as a delegate to the Bar Council even at present. Active in the
Organization of Professional Associations he has served as a General Secretary of the
A respected political leader, he was for sometime the General Secretary pf the Communist
Party of Sri Lanka. He is the present Chairman of the Party. Mr. Collure was the founder
General Secretary of the United Socialist Alliance ( now call the Socialist Alliance ). Which was
originally led by the late Vijaya Kumaratunga. He continues to function as the General Secretary
of the Socialist Alliance which now comprises the Lanka SamaSamaja Party, the Communist
Party of Sri Lanka, the Democratic Left Front, the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party and Desha
Vimukthi Janatha Party and supports the political Alliance led by the Sri Lanka Podujana
As a member of Parliament from 1991 to 1994 and from 2000 to 2004 Mr. Collure distinguished
himself as a forceful debator defending the rights and interests of the working people. While in
Parliament he has served as a member of several Select Committees and other Committees of
Parliament including the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) and the public Accounts
Serving as the Chairman of the Official Languages Commission from 2004 to 2010 Mr. Collure
made a signal contribution towards the implementation of the Official Languages policy
enshrined in the Constitution.
A newspaper columnist, MR. Collure wrote the weekly political review of the Aththa news paper
from 1987 to 1995 and later the weekly foreign news analysis. From 1981 to 1985 he lived in
Prague, the capital of former Czechoslovakia serving on the Editorial Board of the magazine
named Problems of Peace and Socialism which was also known as the World Marxist Review.
On November 21st, 2019 His Excellency Gotabhaya Rajapakshe, the President of Sri Lanka
appointed Raja Collure as the Governor of the Uva Province.
